Much poetry, literature, art and music has been devoted to the topic of love. Abiding classics such as Romeo and Juliet and Madame Bovary explore the dark side of love. Other classics celebrate love in searing prose. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians is perhaps the most famous, stating that ‘love is gentle, love is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast’. This remains a firm favorite at weddings and beyond.
Love is also a core theme of popular culture explored in movies and shows as diverse as When Harry Met Sally and Sex and the City. Most of us have a favorite love story, love song, love movie or love poem. Perhaps there are as many definitions of love as there are people in the world. We would like to know YOUR definition of love. What does the word love mean to you? What examples of love have you seen in your life? What aspects of love have moved you, inspired you and touched you? Which book, movie or song do you think best represents love? There are many kinds of love and I am lucky enough to have been touched by many. My grand mother died over 40 years ago when I had a 1 year old baby. I was very close to her and still think of her often and sometimes feel that she is still taking care of me. I also had romantic love, but was not very lucky in that respect. Now as a mother and grandmother I find that this is the most comfortable and rewarding kind of love.
Love is giving without the expectation to receive anything back in return; it is a ‘pure’ emotion that just is! I have experienced love as a child and adult from others and more recently, from myself to my myself. The one that is the most important to me is the love I feel for myself, it is the core of who I am. Without this wholeness, which is ‘love’, bliss and more, I am nothing and can offer nothing to others and the world at large. Having said all that, the other most pure form of love is the love between a parent and child and on another realm, the love between an animal and it’s human friend.
Love is a genuine sensation of warmth. It’s to appreciate someone’s qualities and character, despite their faults and mistakes. It’s to care for that person’s happiness and well-being, regardless of what that signifies. It’s not something you fall into, but something that grows naturally through time by sharing experiences. You love someone because of the way they make you feel, and of the things they represent within the context of your own life. When you love someone you want to add to their life, and hope to make that person better that they were at the beginning of your relationship, while being loved makes you want to be the best version of yourself. That’s what love is.
